The City of Lauderdale Lakes yearly "My Bag Campaign" event, sponsored by Commissioner Veronica Edwards Phillips, focuses on providing duffel bags to youth who are aging out of the foster care system and/or youth who reside in other protective environments.
This year, members of the community donated over 150 bags delivered to City Hall in support of this initiative. Commissioner Edwards Phillips said, “This service initiative serves to contribute to youth's self-esteem by owning luggage and not having to transport their belongings in a trash bag. Children deserve to be loved and respected!”
The bags were distributed to the following community organizations:
- 4KIDS of South Florida – a Foster Care agency that provides hope to babies, kids, teens, and young adults by providing safe and secure environments for healing, one person at a time.
- The F.L.I.T.E. (Fort Lauderdale Independence, Training and Education) Center – a centralized facility in Broward County servicing children aging out of Foster Care. They assist with education, employment, housing, wellness, and coordination of services.
- SOS Children's Village Florida – a residential facility providing care for abused or children suffering from forms of neglect. In addition, they provide vital support services for our children, to help them deal with their emotions, academic deficiencies, and social skills and behavior.
