Juneteenth Celebration In Lauderdale Lakes

Juneteenth Celebration In Lauderdale Lakes

LAUDERDALE LAKES: The City of Lauderdale Lakes, lead by Commissioner Sandra Davey, celebrated Juneteenth immediately following the Regular Commission Meeting.

The very insightful celebration was filled with very important historical facts promoting unity and pride amongst the Lauderdale Lakes Residents and friends. Dr. Eunice Cason Harvey started the celebration off being honored by the Mayor and Commission for her tenacity and diehard spirit as an African American Woman who overcame many obstacles while growing up in a segregated society.  Former Commissioner Levoyd Williams gave a very uplifting address where he explained the meaning of Juneteenth and advised that the culture should be embraced and taught as it really was as opposed to hiding behind the shadows of society.  His address was followed by a graceful modern dance to  Billie Holiday’s Strange Fruit  by Alexis Jones.

The night ended with great food, laughter and wonderful music.  “I enjoyed myself immensely; and got a history lesson as well,” said Alicia Rein, resident of Lauderdale Lakes.
